What does Hawaii mean?

Cindy asked: What does Hawaii mean?

There are a few beliefs on where the name Hawaii originated. Some believe the name came from Hawaiki, the name for the mythical home for all people polynesian. While others believe it came from a south pacific island Raiatea, which was called ‘Havaii’ at the time of the great migration.

Still other theories exist on the origin of the name Hawaii.

One theory says that the name Hawaii comes from a combination of the words “Hawa” and “ii”and means a small or new homeland; “Hawa” meaning a traditional homeland and “ii” meaning small and raging.

The other theory is that the name comes from the traditional discoverer of the islands, ‘Hawaii Loa’.

Hawaii or The Big Island is the name of the largest of the Hawaiian islands and is also the name of the 50th State in the USA. Hawaii consists of 8 main islands – Hawaii, Maui, Lanai, Molokai, Koho’olawe, Oahu, Kauai, and Ni’ihau.

  1. Okay okay!!!!
I used to ive in hawaii so i know that it is a really peaceful place.
I only lived there for a year and i was only three but i do remember little bits.
Like there was never really bad weather, i was never far from perfectly clear water and i had family all round me.
    So i love hawaii!!!!!

  2. While this is not a true definition of what Hawai’i means, I like to use this to explain hawai’i
Ha – roughly means breath of life
    wai – water
    ‘i means small

So if you break it down phonetically Hawai’i means the small water of life
This is just MY interpretation, this is not what most experts believe. For me, this is what Hawai’i is – the place that gives me new life each time I visit
