Is there any black sand beaches in Hawaii?

Tom asks: Is there any black sand beaches in Hawaii?
There are several black sand beaches in Hawaii. The sand is actually small ground up particles of lava rock worn smooth by the ocean. Lava flows entering the ocean chill and their glassy rinds shatter. Waves and currents may build a beach from the black grains of volcanic glass.
A few beaches with black sand include:
Waianapanapa State Park on Maui, Kehena Beach near Hilo on the big Island, Punalu’u Beach near Kona.
