New Movie About Hawaiian Princess Kaiulani
New Movie About a Hawaiian Princess
British film maker Marc Forby will begin filming in the fall of 2007, a movie about the life of Hawaiian Princess Kaiulani who died at the age of 23 after witnessing the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy and her attempts to restore it by speaking to the congress and the President of the United States.
Princess Kaiulani will be played by 12 year old Kaimana Paaluhi of Oahu as a child and the adult princess will be played by former Hawaii resident Qorianka Kilcher, of Peruvian descent, who played Pocahontas opposite Colin Farrell in the 2005 movie “The New World”.
Forby, who also wrote the script, tells the story from Ka’iulani’s point of view.
“It’s as much about the growth of a young woman into a stateswoman as it is about the demise of a nation. She’s the cinematic way to tell that story,” he said.
Forby’s goal is to produce a historically accurate film that will also be compelling enough to attract a large audience.

Update: I found this movie trailer you may enjoy.

Would like to know if this movie ever came to fruition and if so,where can I buy it? I’m in the Chicago area.
I believe the production was halted over controversy, but is due to be released in 2009. I will try to stay on top of this and keep you posted here.
The Hawaii Film blog has more information about the controversy:
